Reason for this Blog

Welcome!

In this blog, I intend to explore the five Solae of the Reformation, grounded in Martin Luther's writings, and incorporating them into the Christian life today. The five solae arose during the Protestant Reformation, and do an excellent job of summarizing the beliefs of the Christian church.

Sola Scriptura - according to Scripture alone

Sola Fide - through Faith alone

Sola Gratia - by Grace alone

Solus Christus - in Christ alone

Soli Deo Gloria - to the glory of God alone

The five Solae of the Reformation lay the foundation for the Christian faith, and are relevant for eternity. As the father of the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther brought out the five Solas through his writings, sermons, preachings, and teachings.

After studying much of Luther myself this semester, I have come to appreciate his boldness and preparedness to declare the reasons for the hope that is within him according to his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Over and over again, Luther repeats what is most important, and is not afraid to speak the truth declared in Scripture. As a Christian myself, I am inspired by Martin Luther and his boldness to declare the truth as he lived out his vocation.

The apostle Peter declares in 1 Peter 3:15:
"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
I have often been someone who is quiet and more reserved. However, I have come to realize how important it is to be bold about one's own faith, and this is something I am working on growing and leaning into. In his life, writings, and teachings, Martin Luther was the definition of bold and radical. He was not afraid to share the reason for the hope that was within him. As a Christian, I hold fast to the five Solae, and I also believe that they lay an important foundation for the Christian church on earth.
Through this blog, I hope to analyze how the five Solae of the Reformation are grounded in Luther's writings, and how they are specifically relevant for us today as Christians. I will begin by exploring what Luther says with regards to each principle, and then I will offer some present day reflection on each one. I am no expert, but I hope to explore how we can be bold in our faith through expressing and holding fast to the five Solae of the Reformation.
Since I find great joy in creative expression through calligraphy, I have created calligraphy pieces that represent each "Sola" as well. Each of these is accompanied by a simple illustration that depicts or is related to each Sola.
I hope that this blog will be helpful and relatable to Christians everywhere, so that we can be reminded for the reason for the hope that is within us.

Let us pray:
Dear Lord, may this blog be a manifestation of your love for us. Grant me guidance and wisdom from the Holy Spirit so that I may glorify you in these reflections and insights. May everyone who reads this blog see how you love and care for us, despite our sinful nature. Help us to be bold in our faith, through all that we think, say, and do, so that we may glorify you always. In Jesus' name, Amen.
